Prairie Trail Scenic Byway

As the plains move closer to Colorado, you can follow in the footsteps of Native American migrations as they followed herds of bison, and see what European explorers saw as they surveyed the landscape along several roads between Wichita and Salina, intersecting I-135 and I-70. Land & Sky Scenic Byway

Follow 88 miles of State Route 27 in Western Kansas which was once part of cattle trails. While you’re here, ascend to the top of Mount Sunflower, the highest peak in Kansas. There are deep canyons and beautiful rock formations in the Arikaree Breaks. You could spend an entire day seeing the sites here.

Smoky Valley Scenic Byway

The Smoky Hill River Valley is known for wildflowers, native grasses, and cliffs. At one time, this was the American frontier. You can see the history of the place with rock carvings more than 200 years old, left behind by travelers heading west. 

Glacial Hills Scenic Byway

Despite jokes to the contrary, Kansas has hills. The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway follows part of the Lewis & Clark Expedition’s sojourn into the Prairie State. This scenic byway covers the Kansas side of the Missouri River from north of Kansas City to the Nebraska border going through Atchison. You’ll also see part of the original Pony Express and Fort Leavenworth. 

Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway

Southwest of Wichita along U.S. 160, the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway was once part of ancient flood plains that turned the area into a geologic wonder. This 42-mile route has plenty to see and do, from rolling hills and steep canyons to plenty of museums and a drive-in movie theater.
