Once you’re certain that the mechanical issue with your vehicle has been resolved, you can now take to resetting the check engine light. You don’t have to be an ace mechanic to to reset the check engine light, and the process is actually pretty straightforward. Here are the steps:

  1. Put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Turn off the ignition.
  3. Locate the negative terminal on your battery. It will usually have a black cap and a negative symbol (-). If you’re unsure where to find it, check your owner’s manual.
  4. Once you’ve found the negative terminal, loosen the nut on the terminal with a wrench, and pull the negative connector from the battery.
  5. Keep the connector off to the side for about 30-60 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it with the wrench.

Once you’ve performed the following steps, your check engine light should be successfully reset. If this doesn’t work, try checking your gas cap, as it could be loose or cracked, which could cause fumes to release. When this happens, your check engine light can flash as a result.

To fix this, simply remove the gas cap and put it back on. If the check engine light doesn’t turn off immediately, perform this check again, repeat the steps above, and then you should be all set to hit the Newton roads.
