Overheating Explained

What does it mean when your car overheats? Overheating is basically when the engine of your car gets too hot. The temperature gauge will tell you if the temperature of your vehicle is higher than normal, and most cars will have a warning light that will flash on the dashboard. Here are some of the reasons a car would overheat:

  • Cooling System Leak: Usually, overheating is caused by a leak in the cooling system. The cooling system houses the radiator, hoses, water pump, head gasket, and thermostat, which can all get damaged and leak.
  • Coolant Problem: Certain vehicles require certain types of coolant. That’s why putting the wrong coolant-to-water ratio could cause your vehicle to overheat. A proper coolant-to-water ratio would be 50/50.
  • Coolant Hose Blockage: Dirt and debris can get into the cooling system, which can cause blockages in the cooling hose, a necessary component of the cooling system.
  • Radiator Malfunction: Sometimes, radiator fans can have a leak, blockage, or some other issue that can cause it to not work properly and allow the engine to overheat.
  • Broken Water Pump: Engine coolant is sent throughout the cooling system by the water pump. If a water pump has a leak or a shifted pump shaft, then this could cause the engine to overheat.

Now that you know what causes a car to overheat, you can get a better idea of why your car is overheating. Let our experts take a look at your vehicle to get it properly diagnosed and help you get back on the Buhler roads.

What to Do When a Car Overheats

If your car is overheating, you don’t want to drive it on the Newton roads as it can be dangerous to do so. If you have no choice and are already on the roads, then here’s what to do when a car overheats:

  • Turn off the air conditioning and run the heat on full blast. This will keep the heat off of your engine.
  • Pull over as soon as you’re able to.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before opening the hood.
  • Call a towing service or bring it to a service center.

Schedule a visit with Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram to get your vehicle diagnosed and serviced as soon as possible, so you can get back on the road in no time.
